About the role

We’re looking for a credible, committed education leader to step into a nationally-significant role with the NCETM.

As Assistant Director (Targeted Support in Maths), you’ll help drive school improvement across England – working with schools that need support the most and helping them get ready to engage meaningfully with the teaching for mastery approach.

You’ll work closely with the Associate Directors, provide strategic leadership to the Maths Hubs Network, and play a central role in shaping how targeted support is delivered, measured, and sustained.

If you’re passionate about maths education, confident working nationally, and excited to help schools build capacity from the inside out - we’d love to hear from you.

You will:

  • represent Etio and the NCETM in national and regional settings
  • lead initiatives that help schools prepare for teaching for mastery
  • co-design and refine a national targeted support framework aligned with EEF and NPQ guidance
  • guide Maths Hubs in identifying and supporting schools requiring additional development
  • build capacity in local leaders of mathematics education (LLMEs) through professional development
  • collaborate across NCETM teams to ensure that strategy and pedagogy align
  • contribute to the School Development Lead Programme
  • draft high-quality resources and reports to support delivery and share impact
  • work with the DfE and sector stakeholders to track progress and share success stories.

What you’ll bring

  • Qualified Teacher Status with strong maths education expertise
  • Leadership experience across schools or in a system leadership role
  • Deep knowledge of maths pedagogy, including teaching for mastery
  • Skilled communicator, comfortable engaging senior stakeholders
  • Proven ability to design and deliver impactful CPD
  • Confident observing teaching, offering feedback, and supporting improvement
  • Ability to influence, coach, and build strong relationships
  • Strategic thinker, comfortable using data to inform decisions
  • Familiarity with national policy and education priorities in England
  • Self-motivated, thriving in dispersed or remote teams

Desirable

  • Recent experience leading maths improvement across a school, trust, or region
  • Track record of influencing national maths education or contributing to policy
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (for example, the ATM, the MA)
  • Familiarity with NPQ frameworks and EEF Implementation Guidance
  • Awareness of international approaches to maths education
