Shanghai teacher visit update

Exchange visit to schools in England has regrettably been postponed due to the ongoing novel coronavirus outbreak in China

The planned March exchange visit by a group of teachers from Shanghai to schools in England has regrettably been postponed due to the ongoing novel coronavirus outbreak in China.

95 Shanghai teachers were due to spend a fortnight teaching in English schools as part of the China-England mathematics teacher exchange programme linked to Maths Hubs, which was introduced in 2014. Teachers from England visited Shanghai as part of the exchange in November last year.

The Department for Education, who fund the exchange, have said they do not anticipate that it will be possible to re-arrange the visit during this academic year, due to operational constraints on schools during the summer term.

This means that ‘showcase’ events in schools in which Shanghai teachers teach demonstration lessons in front of large audiences of observers will not take place.

However, some Maths Hubs are laying on similar events, with local teachers in the demonstration role. Others are re-shaping their existing calendar of open teaching for mastery events. For details of what is happening in your area, please contact your Maths Hub.
