Initial Teacher Training Providers
Information about NCETM and Maths Hubs Regional ITT Providers Communities
Introduction
Initial teacher training (ITT) is an opportunity to nurture future teachers of mathematics, providing them with the foundations so that, as they enter their careers, they are motivated to continue building specialist knowledge for teaching maths, and to hone their classroom practice through a cycle of reflection focused on pupils’ learning.
In the spirit of collaboration, the NCETM and the Maths Hubs Network are keen to facilitate Regional ITT Providers Communities, promoting the sharing of practice, and supporting programme development aligned with teaching for mastery pedagogies alongside other key priorities in ITT.
Regional ITT Providers Communities
Why get involved?
Regional ITT Providers Communities facilitate:
- collaboration between ITT Providers
- connections between ITT Providers and Maths Hubs.
The aim is to support ITT Providers to reflect collaboratively on how best to help trainees understand the Five Big Ideas in Teaching for Mastery, so that they can develop classroom practices that allow all pupils to learn and enjoy mathematics.
In addition, Regional ITT Provider Communities respond to local contexts and priorities identified by their members. These communities provide a professional space in which participants can share research, critically analyse and evaluate practice, and consider the challenges faced by trainee teachers as they begin their careers in maths education. Together, members identify effective ways of working with trainees to address and reduce these barriers.
The communities also provide opportunities to reflect on how we nurture future maths teachers, fostering their development as confident and skilled practitioners. Central to this work is a shared exploration of how trainees learn to become teachers of maths, and of the role ITT Providers play in supporting this professional journey.
Finally, by connecting ITT Providers with Maths Hubs, further opportunities for initial teacher trainees can be accessed, such as arranging observations of learning in schools where teaching for mastery is central to maths teaching and learning.
Who can be a member of a Regional ITT Providers Community?
All DfE-accredited ITT Providers with responsibility for leading maths provision and their local delivery partners, alongside members of each Maths Hubs Leadership and Management team, are invited to join a regional community.
These regional communities are led by a pair of Regional Community Leads, representing both Higher Education and school-centred provision.
What else is on offer?
National Webinars
All ITT Providers are invited to two National Webinars over the academic year.
These National Webinars will provide, for example:
- national updates on the maths education landscape
- sharing of relevant research
- differing perspectives on developing as a teacher of maths (from Early Career Teachers, to Mastery Specialists, to ITT Providers).
Regional Events
Regions will offer events that facilitate collaboration on:
- implications for ITT Providers related to the content of the national webinars
- key priorities for ITT raised by members of the Regional ITT Providers Community.
Regions will also offer opportunities for Regional ITT Providers to be connected to their Maths Hub, allowing for support with programme development, such as the opportunity for trainees to visit schools to observe learning and discuss planning with teachers.
What are the geographic regions and who are the Regional ITT Providers Community Leads?
ITT Providers join one of eight geographical regions: East Midlands, London, South East, North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, North West, East of England, South West, and West Midlands.
