Secondary Teaching for Mastery – Sustaining

A vibrant professional learning community to reflect upon and develop mastery approaches

This project is for departments who have previously participated in Development Work Groups. While the Mastery Advocates from these departments will be significant members of the Work Group, the whole department is a member of this professional learning community.

Hear from a teacher whose long-term involvement in the Teaching for Mastery Programme has benefited her own practice, that of her department, and the students she teaches.

 

 

Who can take part?

These Work Groups are for all departments that have previously participated in Mastery Development Work Groups and all Cohort 1-7 Mastery Specialist Departments. The two lead participants continue to be Advocates who have participated in a Development Work Group and key teachers from a Mastery Specialist’s department, but particular Work Group sessions may sometimes be joined by participants' departmental colleagues.

What is involved?

Each Work Group will have a focus for the year. The four foci for 2024/25 are:

  • developing mathematical thinking
  • NEW for 2024/25 - developing fluency with multiplicative reasoning in Key Stage 3
  • developing mathematical coherence for learners across maths and science
  • a bespoke teaching for mastery focus.

The new focus on developing fluency with multiplicative reasoning is open to all schools involved in the Sustaining phase of teaching for mastery, which includes any schools who have previously been involved in Development, even if they have taken a break since starting their mastery journey. Multiplicative reasoning underpins approximately two thirds of the content of GCSE Maths, and this focus will allow departments to fully understand its implications for KS3 teaching.

What will you learn?

  • Your students will develop a deep, secure and connected understanding of the maths they are learning
  • You will continue to develop teaching for mastery approaches consistently across your department
  • You and your department will collaborate to create a coherent curriculum in a culture of professional learning
  • You will develop and implement a coherent and ambitious sustained development plan

What is the cost?

The Secondary Teaching for Mastery – Sustaining project is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.
